Ikuno Mine Headquarters
This location, where Mitsubishi Materials Corporation's Ikuno Works still operates today, was the headquarters of the Ikuno Mine from the beginning of the Meiji era, and the central facility for mine management was built there. The one-story, white brick building that can be seen immediately after passing through the main gate is called the Chumon Rest House, and was used as a guard post and motor room. The exterior walls are covered with mortar, but the bricks are laid in English style, with short and long sides alternating. The building with a hipped roof visible in the background is the Oliver Falter Room (former smelting mill). The factory is said to have been built around 1893.
At the back on the left, the old mixed area is still in use as an active building. It was built in 1898 as a mining factory based on the design of French engineer Mouset and others. This is the oldest and largest facility at Ikuno Mine. This two-story brick building with a stone foundation was renovated in 1955 and became a general office. Although it is currently reinforced with mortar and cannot be seen, the walls are finished with French brickwork. You can see the brickwork from the time of construction in the window frame on the second floor.
