The Asada Residence

Cultural Property

Built in 1932, the Asada Residence was formerly the residence of Yozo Asada. The Asada family had served as jiyakunin for generations since the Edo Period, and during the Meiji Era, both the Asada family and Ikuno Mine contributed to the modernization of Japan.

In working for the development of Ikuno, Yozo followed in the footsteps of his father Teijiro, who also served as the first president of Ikuno Bank. Yozo is particularly known for his dedicated efforts at developing the Bantan Railway and, when the mine was privatized, negotiating to secure government grants for unloading cargo.

The building is a stately two-story wooden structure. The gently arched gabled roof, the kegyo end tiles on the roof over the entrance area, the shikidai step at the entryway, and the Western-style main building with its triangular roof and scratched brick exterior are all quite unusual for a house of its era in Ikuno.
