Kuwata Family Residence Main Building
Cultural Property
The Kuwata Family Residence was home to the jiyakunin officials who served under the local magistrate and had jurisdiction over Ikuno during the Edo Period. A sign posted during the building’s construction tells us that it was built in 1824.
The site includes the main house with a gabled roof featuring the region's distinctive Ikuno tiles, a storehouse with annex, a bathroom, a lavatory, and a garden.
Buildings that retain structural parts such as earthen floors, pillars, and koyagumi roof structures are valuable for helping us to understand the lives of jiyakunin officials who worked in the mines during the Edo Period. Their importance could very well resonate beyond the local region.
